The modern slavery

It has been 200 years since the UK parlement signed the act of abolish the slave trade, yet today, when people are having freedom to choose, to get basically anything they want as long it doesn’t conflict with law, slavery is transforming into another new form.

The modern slavery takes shape in a form of illegal sex worker in many country, one of them which been highlighted recently include Cambodia, Thailand, and the UK. Most of the victim come from a poorer region and promised a better future coming to the metropolitan city.

This is one of the victim testimonials as quoted from BBC

Dalyn 17 from Cambodia
I was living with my grandfather in Cambodia. As a normal, happy child I did not fear anything.
Then, at 12 years old, a woman asked me whether I would like to work at a garment factory.
I agreed and went with her. But she sold me to the owner of a brothel in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital.
I felt betrayed and cheated. I thought I was going to find work. I never thought I was going to be sold like that.
There were lots of other boys and girls at the brothel. I overheard two pimps bargaining and heard one of them say my price was $150 (£78).
My heart sank and I started asking myself where the hell had I ended up.

Jierra 19 from Lithuania
was helped by the Poppy Project, thought she was coming to London on holiday with friends, only to find they were people traffickers who sold her into prostitution.
She said: "When I was with clients I tried to pretend I was doing something else, but I couldn't. It made me so angry that I was often violent towards the clients.
"The man who owned me beat me and then sold me on. I was too much trouble.
"Even if my friends don't judge me for what happened, they will always know what I did. They will never forget, and neither can I."

What happened to Dalyn and Jierra might be beyond imagination for some of us, it just a reflection of how uneven the world development has been maybe it is time for us to pay attention to more details and find solutions for small details but essentials like this modern slavery.
